Dokumentation
The Danish Institute for Human Rights has the pleasure of inviting you to a seminar with Director Morten Kjærum, who will be speaking on: The evolving domestication of human rights Tuesday 22 April at 10:00 - 12:00 Since the establishment of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights in 1948, there has been a persistent strife towards moving human rights from the international to the national sphere, embedding them in the political, social and legal life of the nations. In this period, international and regional institutions have endeavoured in different ways to support this process, and occasionally new institutions charged with a specific mandate to promote the implementation of human rights have seen the day. At the European level, this was the case in 2007, when the European Union Agency for Fundamental Rights (FRA) was created as part of the EU policy to respect and promote fundamental rights in its Member States. In his talk, Morten Kjærum, Director of the Danish Institute for Human Rights, will address processes of domestication of human rights with a particular emphasis on his visions of the new agency s role in supporting the EU Member States in implementing human rights. Morten Kjærum s involvement in a large number of national, regional and international organisations as well as his participation in partnership programs with governments, civil society and the private sector in all parts of the world, has made him a nationally and internationally highly renowned expert in the field of human rights. A prolific speaker, he is also the author of numerous articles on international and national human rights law. Since 2002, he has served as a member of the UN Committee on the Elimination of Racial Discrimination, and in 2004 he was elected president of the International Coordinating Committee of National Institutions for the Promotion and Protection of Human Rights. In June 2008, Morten Kjærum will take up the position of Director of the European Union Agency for Fundamental Rights. All are welcome The seminar takes place at the Danish Institute for Human Rights, the Nordskov Room, Wilders Plads 8H, 1401 Copenhagen K. Registration is not needed. The seminar is part of the Human Rights Seminar Series 2008: Shaping History. Seminar Series marking the 60th anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.
